The Jasper train station is a historic railway station in the centre of Jasper town. Built in 1925 for the Canadian National Railway, the station is a designated federal heritage building and remains an important gateway to Jasper National Park.
Its central location makes arriving by train particularly convenient. Hotels, restaurants and shops are within easy reach, allowing travellers to step off the train and begin their stay in Jasper without a long transfer.
The station provides step-free access and accessible facilities for travellers with mobility needs, including wheelchair-accessible station and platform access, accessible washrooms and a wheelchair lift. Current station hours and assistance requirements should be confirmed for your travel dates.

Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, covering approximately 11,228 square kilometres of mountains, glaciers, forests, lakes and river valleys in Alberta. It forms part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also a designated Dark Sky Preserve, making it a great place for stargazing.
The park is home to wildlife including elk, bears, moose, wolves and mountain caribou. Jasper has a long Indigenous history connected to peoples including the Cree and Stoney Nakoda, who travelled through and lived within this region long before the arrival of the railway.
Popular activities include cruising across Maligne Lake to view Spirit Island, seeing the power of Athabasca Falls, canoeing across Pyramid Lake or Patricia Lake, visiting Miette Hot Springs, and riding the Jasper SkyTram. Many experiences can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace with short walks and scenic stops.
Canadian Train Vacations can personalize your time in Jasper with experiences such as the Maligne Lake Cruise, Jasper Sightseeing tour, Sunrise Sightseeing and Wildlife Tour, Jeep Wildlife Tour, Jasper E-Bike Tour, Jasper Sidecar Tour, Private Icefields Tour, and visits to the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier. Rise early for Jasper’s best light
I recommend heading out early in the morning, when Jasper’s lakes and mountains can be especially beautiful. It can also be a good time for wildlife viewing, so a sunrise sightseeing or wildlife tour is worth considering if you enjoy photography.

The best time to visit Jasper depends on the scenery and experiences you want, but June through September offers warmer weather and the widest choice of sightseeing activities.
Summer (June to August): Summer brings long daylight hours, warmer temperatures and access to many of Jasper National Park’s seasonal attractions. Maligne Lake cruises, hiking tours, water activities, and a wide variety of guided sightseeing experiences are available during this period. July and August are also the busiest months, so popular hotels and experiences can book well in advance.
September: September is one of the most popular times to visit Jasper, with cooler temperatures and early fall colours appearing across the valleys. Most sightseeing experiences are still operating, and it’s an excellent time for wildlife viewing. The elk rut season starts late August or early September and continues through October.
Shoulder months (May and October): May and October are quieter shoulder-season months. Weather can be more variable and some seasonal excursions have reduced operating dates, but these months can suit travellers looking for a quieter stay. October is also when Jasper hosts its annual Dark Sky Festival, celebrating astronomy and the park’s dark skies.
Winter (November to April): Winter offers a quieter side of Jasper, with snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes and opportunities for winter activities and wildlife viewing. VIA Rail’s The Canadian operates year-round, making it possible to visit Jasper by train even when Rocky Mountaineer is not running.

Enjoy Jasper’s dark skies
If stargazing is important to you, I recommend visiting in October. Jasper National Park is a Dark Sky Preserve, and the Jasper Dark Sky Festival makes this a particularly special time to experience the night sky.
