Canadian Rockies rail trips: Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper

Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper can all feature in a Canadian Rockies train tour, but they are not on the same direct rail route. First Passage to the West serves Banff or Lake Louise, while Journey Through the Clouds and VIA Rail serve Jasper. Road transfers and sightseeing excursions connect the mountain towns.

The rail distance from Vancouver to Banff is approximately 850 kilometres (528 miles), covered over 2 days of daylight travel with an overnight in Kamloops. From Banff and Lake Louise, guests typically spend 2 to 4 additional nights exploring the national parks before transferring to Calgary for the flight home.

The Vancouver-Jasper route covers approximately 900 kilometres (560 miles) and many travellers spend at least a night or two exploring Jasper National Park before transferring to Banff along the Icefields Parkway.

Those who prefer to start in the Rockies and travel west may begin from Calgary instead, reversing the journey and arriving into Vancouver.

Vancouver, the West Coast and Whistler

Vancouver is the coastal gateway for many Western Canada train trips. Add 2 or 3 nights to explore Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown, and the waterfront. A West Coast train tour can also include time on Vancouver Island, reached by ferry or air rather than by these rail routes.

What are the places to visit on the West Coast of Canada?

Vancouver, Whistler, Victoria, Campbell River, and Tofino offer different ways to extend your rail vacation. Coastal food, gardens, Indigenous-led experiences, and time beside the Pacific complement the mountain scenery.

Place What to experience How it fits your trip
Vancouver Stanley Park, Granville Island, coastal dining, and neighbourhood walks Stay before or after the train journey
Whistler Mountain scenery, village restaurants, and seasonal outdoor activities Add a Sea-to-Sky road excursion; rail access no longer available as 2026 was the last year for the Rainforest to Gold Rush route
Victoria The Inner Harbour, gardens, and whale-watching excursions Add a Vancouver Island stay with ferry or air connections
Campbell River Coastal wildlife experiences and access to forests and waterways Allow extra nights on Vancouver Island and arranged transport
Tofino Pacific beaches, rainforest walks, and coastal excursions Add a longer Vancouver Island extension with road or air connections

A Vancouver Island and Victoria extension is a popular optional add-on for guests who enjoy a gentler change of pace. The ferry crossing from Vancouver to Victoria takes around 90 minutes each way, and the city offers beautiful gardens, whale-watching excursions and a very walkable historic waterfront. When is the best season for a Western Canada rail tour?

The rail season for western Canada runs from roughly mid-April through to mid-October, which means the landscape is at its most dramatic for the full run of spring, summer and autumn. Outside those months, Rocky Mountaineer and most mountain tour operators are not operating, so timing is worth thinking through early.

Spring in the Rockies on a Western rail tour

Is the quietest part of the season, with lower from-prices and a landscape that is transitioning from winter white to spring green. Snow is still possible in the high passes, which adds its own beauty to the rail journey.

Whichever season you choose, your local travel expert at Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada will check rail availability and hotel options for your specific dates.
