No matter the season in Jasper, a woolly hat or toque will come in handy. Temperatures in the mountains drop at night in the Summer and you might be surprised at how often you reach for this uber-Canadian accessory.

Which national park train trips are best for a relaxed pace in Canada?

Train travel offers a wonderful way to experience Canada’s incredible national parks at a relaxed pace, with both VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer offering scenic journeys to Banff and Jasper. Rather than navigating mountain roads or busy airports, you can settle into your seat and enjoy the scenery as it passes by.

Both options offer a comfortable way to reach the national parks, but Rocky Mountaineer is particularly well suited to travellers looking for a relaxed experience. Its daylight-only journeys travel at a slower speed through the mountains, giving you more time to take in the scenery and landmarks along the route.

The best season for a Canadian national park train tour is generally June through September, when warmer weather and longer daylight hours make it easier to enjoy sightseeing and outdoor experiences. Summer journeys are well suited to travellers who want to spend more time exploring lakes, mountains and scenic attractions, while early Fall offers beautiful Fall foliage.

The Rockies are at their most accessible and the days are long during this period. Wildflower meadows bloom above the treeline in July and August, Fall colour arrives in late September, and every month in between offers clear mountain air and excellent wildlife viewing.

For seniors, a national park train tour offers a comfortable and convenient way to experience the Canadian Rockies and their spectacular national parks. These journeys can be personalized to match your preferred pace and accommodate individual needs, including mobility considerations and dietary requirements. All our rail journeys include accommodation, rail tickets, meals onboard the train, activities, transfers from airports to hotels and train stations, electronic travel documentation packages and personalized customer service support.

Banff to Jasper train tours

Travelling between Banff and Jasper is one of the most scenic parts of a Canadian Rockies itinerary. There is no direct train from Banff to Jasper, so this portion of the journey is completed by road along the Icefields Parkway, with rail travel connecting the trip at either end.

How do you get from Banff to Jasper?

There is no direct Banff Jasper train or Jasper to Banff train. Instead, the two national parks are connected by road along the Icefields Parkway, a scenic route stretching about 290 km (180 mi). The drive takes around four hours without stops, but a private transfer or guided coach can include time to enjoy the scenery and visit some of the Canadian Rockies’ most famous sights.

Along the way, travellers can see Peyto Lake, the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Falls, with stops at scenic viewpoints and attractions. This makes the journey between Banff and Jasper an opportunity to explore rather than simply get from one destination to the next.

The road transfer can be combined with rail travel on either side of the national parks. VIA Rail’s The Canadian and Rocky Mountaineer’s Journey Through the Clouds both connect Vancouver and Jasper, while Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West connects Vancouver and Banff. Travellers can take the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff, then continue by road to Jasper, or visit Jasper first and travel by road to Banff before taking the Rocky Mountaineer back to Vancouver.

This combination makes it possible to visit both Banff and Jasper while experiencing the Canadian Rockies by rail and road. A Vacation Advisor can arrange the transportation between Banff and Jasper and tailor your rail journeys, accommodation, sightseeing and time in each destination to your preferred pace.
