What makes the First Passage to the West route special?

The First Passage to the West stands out as a Rocky Mountaineer route steeped in both historical and cultural significance. This is the path of the famed Canadian Pacific Railway, which united Canada’s east and west in 1885. As you travel along the tracks, you’ll witness engineering marvels and learn about the determination it took to build a railway through the rugged Rockies.

What landmarks do you see?

The First Passage to the West route passes some of Western Canada's most memorable landmarks, with powerful rivers, dramatic canyons, historic railway sites, and mountain scenery visible throughout the journey. As Rocky Mountaineer travels during daylight hours, you can enjoy these sights in comfort, with spacious seating in a glass-dome coach and panoramic views through the large windows.

Fraser River and Hell's Gate

Fraser River and Hell's Gate

The train follows the Fraser River into the dramatic Fraser Canyon, where steep rock walls rise above the water. At Hell's Gate, the river narrows significantly as a powerful volume of water rushes through the canyon.

Cisco Crossing

Spiral Tunnels

Spiral Tunnels

One of the route's engineering highlights, the Spiral Tunnels were built to help trains manage the steep mountain terrain near Kicking Horse Pass. The railway curves through tunnels beneath Cathedral Mountain and Mount Ogden as it climbs through the Rockies.

Continental Divide

Continental Divide

The route crosses the Continental Divide at the border between British Columbia and Alberta, marking the point where waters flow towards opposite sides of the continent. It's also a memorable milestone as the journey travels deeper into the Canadian Rockies.

Kicking Horse Canyon

The train follows the Kicking Horse River through rugged mountain terrain, with steep canyon walls and dramatic peaks surrounding the route. This stretch offers some of the journey's most impressive mountain scenery.
