What does a trans-Canada rail trip cover?

Travelling Canada by train means passing through some of the country's most dramatic geography in a single journey. Here is what guests see and experience on each segment.

  • The Maritimes: on a full coast-to-coast vacation, The Ocean travels between Halifax and Montreal through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and eastern Quebec. The route passes forests, rivers, farmland and communities shaped by the Atlantic.
  • The Canadian Shield and Northern Ontario: west of Toronto, the Canadian train follows the edge of the Canadian Shield, crossing lakes, boreal forest and granite outcroppings that stretch from the Great Lakes to Hudson Bay. The landscape is vast and unhurried, best absorbed from a Sleeper Plus cabin with a view.
  • The prairies: west of Winnipeg, the landscape opens into the great wheat and canola prairies of Saskatchewan and Alberta, with enormous skies and the feeling that the country is stretching to its full width beneath you.
  • The Canadian Rockies: the Rockies appear as The Canadian approaches Jasper National Park, with glacier-capped peaks, river valleys and wildlife at the trackside. Guests can disembark at Jasper or Banff for a national park stay before continuing.
  • The Skeena add-on: For a longer western adventure, VIA Rail has a Jasper–Prince Rupert train, historically called The Skeena. This two-day route travels between Jasper and Prince Rupert, with an overnight stop in Prince George, through remote river valleys and mountain landscapes. This route is not included in the itineraries through Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada.

From food tours in Montreal to whale-watching excursions out of Vancouver, there is plenty to experience away from the train. Add an extra night or two at the beginning or end of your journey so you have time to explore.

True coast-to-coast: The Ocean and The Canadian (Halifax to Vancouver)

A complete Halifax–Vancouver train vacation combines three VIA Rail services to cover more than 6,000 kilometres by rail: the Ocean travels between Halifax and Montreal in roughly 23 hours, while Corridor trains connect Montreal and Toronto, where travellers board The Canadian for its four-night journey between Toronto and Vancouver.
Together, these services span the country between the Atlantic and Pacific. Travellers can also choose Rocky Mountaineer for the Rockies portion.

The Canadian Insiders at Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada build hotel nights into the connections because long-distance trains share tracks with freight traffic and delays can occur. The extra time keeps the itinerary comfortable if schedules change and allow time to explore in its destination.
