Which luxury sleeper train trips cross Canada?

VIA Rail’s The Canadian is the only long-distance sleeper train to travel across the country, with Prestige Class offering an elevated, high-end way to experience the journey. The full route between Toronto and Vancouver takes approximately four days and four nights (around 96 hours) to complete, and covers around 4,466 km (2,775 mi), showcasing the country’s diverse landscapes, from the coastal mountains and Canadian Rockies to sweeping prairies and the rugged Canadian Shield.

The Canadian travels in both directions, departing from Toronto westbound or Vancouver eastbound. The eastbound route from Vancouver passes through Kamloops, Jasper, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Sioux Lookout and Sudbury before arriving in Toronto.

Which luxury sleeper train trips cross Canada?

Prestige Class is available exclusively on this cross-country route, making it a truly distinctive way to experience Canada's most iconic scenery in private luxury. The cabin offers a refined, spacious environment designed for comfort and privacy, with a large window framing the landscape and creating a continuous connection with the passing scenery. A leather sofa occupies the central space by day and transforms into a double bed at night, and guests enjoy having their own private washroom and showers. A flat-screen television with curated programming complements the cabin's tranquil atmosphere. Dining service features gourmet meals paired with Canadian wines, served in an elegant setting, and Prestige travellers enjoy priority access to the Park Car, where panoramic dome seating and lounge areas extend the viewing experience well beyond the cabin.

The Canadian also features accessible Prestige Class cabins that are designed to accommodate passengers with mobility needs or disabilities, offering additional space and an accessible private washroom with shower.

The second-highest service level on The Canadian is Sleeper Plus Class. Unlike Prestige Class, Sleeper Plus’s private cabins have a more compact design and shared washroom facilities, without a private shower. Travellers can choose between private cabins and upper or lower berths, with access to the dining car and Park Car.

Luxury train Canada: the route

One of the most luxurious ways to travel across Canada by rail combines Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail’s The Canadian, creating a refined journey between Vancouver and Toronto. Travellers can experience either train individually or combine both to enjoy different styles of luxury rail travel across the country.

The journey can begin in Western Canada aboard Rocky Mountaineer, whose daylight-only routes through the Canadian Rockies feature glass-dome coaches, gourmet dining, and onboard commentary as mountain corridors, river valleys, and alpine scenery unfold outside. From there, the journey can continue east aboard VIA Rail’s The Canadian, Canada’s flagship long-distance train, offering private sleeper cabins, onboard dining, and panoramic observation cars for multi-day travel through the country’s interior.

Together, these rail experiences can cover the Canadian Rockies, prairie provinces, northern Ontario, and major urban centres, connecting mountains, forests, lakes, and cities at a relaxed pace that allows travellers to appreciate the changing landscapes along the way.

A luxury train journey across Canada offers a comfortable way to experience the country from west to east (or vice versa).

Royal Canadian Pacific also offers luxury rail journeys in Canada. As of 2026, Royal Canadian Pacific is not advertising scheduled public rail journeys, and no future public schedule has been announced. What are the benefits of a personalized luxury rail tour over a pre-packaged option?

A personalized luxury rail tour gives you the flexibility to shape your vacation around your preferences, needs, budget and interests, unlike a pre-packaged option, where you follow a set itinerary with limited flexibility.

This flexibility is especially valuable when it comes to luxury travel, since you can choose the level of rail service, luxury accommodations and exclusive experiences that best suit your tastes. You might opt for GoldLeaf or Prestige Class, to stay at iconic Fairmont hotels such as Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, add private tours or extend your time in a destination, creating a journey that feels as exceptional as it is personal.

That’s a big part of the reason why each of our luxury train trips is personalized to the individual traveller. Our Vacation Advisors, also known as Canadian Insiders, take the time to understand your needs, interests, preferences and budget, then present options that align with what matters most to you. You choose your preferred accommodations, luxury hotels, private transfers and experiences, while your Canadian Insider takes care of the details, including bookings, transfers, activities, tours and accommodations. With Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada, you can enjoy the comfort and service of a luxury vacation, with a personalized itinerary built around your preferences.
