Vancouver to Toronto Train Journey
Places visited: Vancouver, Kamloops, Banff, Jasper, Toronto
Sleeper trains in Canada include VIA Rail’s The Canadian, running between Vancouver and Toronto, and The Ocean, between Montreal and Halifax; both offer overnight accommodation, dining, and social spaces to relax while watching Canada’s scenery unfold outside your window.

The best Canadian sleeper train trips also include time to explore iconic destinations such as Vancouver, Toronto, and the Canadian Rockies. All of these trips can be personalized with train service, hotel class, and choices of activities.
Overnight train travel lets you cover long distances overnight, sleeping in a berth or private cabin and waking to new scenery. Rather than simply getting from one place to another, the train experience becomes part of the vacation.
On VIA Rail’s long-distance trains, the pace is relaxed. Spend the day enjoying the scenery from your cabin, a lounge or dome car, sit down for meals in the Dining Car, then return to your sleeping accommodations, which have been prepared for a comfortable night’s sleep. In Sleeper Plus and Prestige Class, meals are included.
The two main VIA Rail sleeper trains featured in Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada itineraries are The Canadian and The Ocean.
Four nights and 4,466 kilometres (2,775 miles): The Canadian is VIA Rail’s flagship transcontinental train and the classic sleeper train across Canada.
Running in both directions between Toronto and Vancouver, the route crosses five provinces and four time zones in approximately 93 to 97 hours. Along the way, the landscape shifts from the lakes and forests of the Canadian Shield to the Prairies and, eventually, the peaks of the Canadian Rockies.
Life onboard is deliberately unhurried. In the Dining Car, Sleeper Plus and Prestige guests enjoy three-course meals as the scenery passes outside. The Skyline dome car offers elevated panoramic views, with comfortable lounge seating for relaxing between meals. At the rear of the train, the Park car is home to another dome viewing area, reserved for Prestige passengers, and a downstairs lounge designed for settling in and watching the landscape unfold.
Your cabin set-up changes from day to night. During the day, it is set up with seating so you can relax privately between time in the shared cars. At night, your attendant prepares the cabin for sleep, converting the seating and making up the beds with fresh linens.
Approximately 24 hours is all it takes to travel from Montreal to Halifax aboard The Ocean, VIA Rail's other sleeper train and the gateway to the Maritimes, passing Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
The Ocean offers sleeper cabins and a dome car, and easily fits into an Eastern Canada vacation that combines the culture of Montreal, the character of the Maritimes, and the drama of the Atlantic shore. Adding a train to Toronto with an excursion to Niagara Falls creates a truly memorable Eastern Canada itinerary.
The Ocean is a quieter, more intimate journey than The Canadian, and a natural first choice for guests who want to try an overnight train without committing to four nights on board.

Longer summer days mean more sightseeing
Late spring through early fall brings longer daylight hours, giving you more time to enjoy the scenery. Winter offers a completely different experience, with snowy landscapes and cosy evenings onboard.

No, Rocky Mountaineer is not a sleeper train. It operates during daylight hours, with guests staying in hotels overnight. This is intentional: travelling only by day means you don’t miss the Canadian Rockies scenery while you sleep.
The two Canadian train experiences are complementary rather than interchangeable. VIA Rail’s The Canadian provides the classic overnight sleeper-train experience, while Rocky Mountaineer train focuses on luxury sightseeing by day. Many of our most popular itineraries include time on both.

VIA Rail offers several levels of accommodation, from Economy seating through Sleeper Plus and, on The Canadian, Prestige Class. Inclusive trip itineraries booked with Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada do not use Economy Class.
Prices reflect starting points for a trip featuring this service with Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada and include rail, hotels off the train, transfers, and sightseeing tours and activities. Starting prices reflect low season.

Couples should consider two Cabins for One
If you’re worried about sleeping in bunk beds, couples should consider booking two Cabins for One, over a Cabin for Two. You can request your cabins be across the hallway from each other. Most travellers spend most of their days together in common areas and viewing domes.

For travellers looking for a luxury sleeper train across Canada, Prestige Class on The Canadian is VIA Rail’s top accommodation.
The journey includes four nights of transcontinental rail travel with a private cabin, en-suite shower, modular sofa bed, concierge service, included dining and expansive views. It provides considerably more personal space than the other accommodation categories.
Canadian Train Vacations can build the rail journey into a larger personalized vacation, adding hotel stays in Vancouver or Toronto and extra time in the Canadian Rockies.
Sleeper Plus offers an alternative for travellers who value a private cabin and included dining but don’t need the additional space and amenities of Prestige.
The Canadian Prestige Journey is for travellers who prioritize luxury, privacy, and elevated onboard service. The itinerary includes the full Vancouver to Toronto route with top-of-the-line Prestige Class accommodations, inclusive dining, dedicated concierge support, and reserved access to select observation cars.

Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada have local rail experts who plan sleeper-train vacations as personalized itineraries rather than simply booking a rail ticket.
Your Canadian Insider will help you choose the train, direction, cabin class and length of journey, then arrange the surrounding vacation — including hotels, transfers and selected experiences.
Itineraries with less time on the train, including 3-day options, are available if you don’t want to spend four nights aboard The Canadian. There is also no direct cross-border sleeper train between the United States and Canada, so guests arriving from the U.S. may need to connect with VIA Rail services in cities such as Toronto or Montreal.
Sleeper Plus and Prestige cabins can have limited availability, particularly on popular departures, so planning early provides more choice.
Every detail is handled, from the moment the train departs to the moment you check into your final hotel. Plan your sleeper-train vacation with our local travel experts.

Build a stopover into your vacation
Rather than treating The Canadian simply as transportation, Canadian Train Vacations can arrange longer stays in destinations such as Jasper, with hotels and sightseeing included before you continue your journey.
