Both offer comfortable, scenic journeys, but their routes and onboard experiences are quite different. The right choice depends on the destinations, pace, and type of rail travel that you’re looking for.

There are two main Rocky Mountaineer routes between Vancouver and destinations in the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise), First Passage to the West and Journey through the Clouds.

Banff and Lake Louise rail tours

Banff and Lake Louise are two of the most popular destinations for a Canadian Rockies rail tour. The Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West is a scenic rail route for reaching these iconic mountain destinations. The train leaves Vancouver in the morning, follows the Fraser Canyon through the Coast Mountains, overnights in Kamloops, and arrives at Banff or Lake Louise by mid-afternoon on the second rail day.

A personalized rail tour can include several nights in Banff or Lake Louise, giving you time to explore the mountains, lakes and attractions beyond your days aboard the Rocky Mountaineer. Waterton Lakes National Park can also be added to your itinerary for a more extended Rockies experience, as well as a stay at the world-renowned Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Our local Vacation Advisors listen to your needs, interests and preferences, and can recommend accommodations, experiences and destinations that fit your travel style.

Jasper rail tours

Jasper is a popular stop on Canadian Rockies rail tours, with both Rocky Mountaineer’s Journey Through the Clouds and VIA Rail’s The Canadian travelling through the town. Rocky Mountaineer approaches Jasper from the west, following the North Thompson River and passing the majestic peaks of Mount Robson Provincial Park. This stretch is travelled entirely by daylight, while The Canadian covers part of it overnight. The Canadian travels through Jasper in both directions, approaching from the west on its eastbound journey and from the east on its westbound journey from Toronto, crossing the Prairies before entering the Rockies.

A personalized Jasper rail tour often includes a cruise on Maligne Lake, a drive along the Icefields Parkway south toward Banff, and a night or two at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Our Vacation Advisors can help build an itinerary around the destinations and experiences that interest you. The pacing can be as relaxed or active as you like — simply share your preferences and needs, and your Vacation Advisor can recommend options that suit you.

  • June to August is peak season, with the longest daylight hours, warm temperatures and turquoise glacial lakes at their most vivid.
