Which VIA Rail tours cross Canada?

VIA Rail operates an extensive passenger rail network across Canada, making it possible to combine several train journeys into one coast-to-coast vacation. Our Canada train tour packages can bring together rail travel, hotels, transfers and sightseeing in one personalized itinerary.

The Canadian: Toronto to Vancouver

The Canadian is VIA Rail’s iconic cross-country sleeper train, travelling approximately 4,466 kilometres between Toronto and Vancouver over four days and four nights through Ontario, the prairies and the Canadian Rockies. Destinations along the way include Jasper and Winnipeg. During the day, guests can relax in lounge and glass-domed viewing areas; at night, Sleeper Plus and Prestige Class guests settle into private sleeping accommodation, with meals served in the dining car.

The Canadian can be combined with other VIA Rail routes to connect Western Canada with Quebec and the Maritimes. Canadian Train Vacations builds the VIA Rail journey into a personalized itinerary with hotels, transfers and sightseeing excursions. It can also feature shorter rail segments, such as the 3-day journey between Toronto and Jasper or the overnight journey between Vancouver and Jasper, if the full cross-country route does not suit your pace.

I like to spend part of the daytime journey in the panoramic viewing areas, especially through the Rockies, where the higher vantage point gives you a different perspective from your cabin.

Rocky Mountaineer vs VIA Rail: which suits your trip?

Both VIA Rail tours and Rocky Mountaineer offer scenic train travel in Canada, but the experience is very different:

  • VIA Rail Train Across Canada: Best known for long-distance sleeper trains such as The Canadian, with cross-country and regional routes, year-round service, onboard dining and overnight accommodation.
  • Rocky Mountaineer Train: Offers daylight-only luxury train journeys through Western Canada and the Canadian Rockies, with glass-dome coaches, premium dining and overnight hotel stays. It operates seasonally, generally between April and October.
  • Choose by travel style: VIA Rail suits travellers who enjoy a traditional sleeper-train journey and covering longer distances by rail, while Rocky Mountaineer focuses on daytime sightseeing and mountain scenery. VIA Rail is also the option for winter train travel and for exploring Eastern Canada.
  • You can combine both: Some Canadian Train Vacations itineraries include VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer, giving you two different rail experiences in one personalized vacation.

Our local travel experts can help you compare Rocky Mountaineer vs VIA Rail and choose the Canadian train journey that fits your travel plans.
