Which train reaches Canada's North?

VIA Rail operates the Winnipeg–Churchill train, a long-distance service between Winnipeg and Churchill in northern Manitoba. The route — historically associated with the name the Hudson Bay — travels through remote boreal forest and subarctic landscapes, including The Pas and Thompson, before reaching the shores of Hudson Bay.

It should not be confused with Ontario Northland’s Polar Bear Express. Despite its name, the Polar Bear Express travels between Cochrane and Moosonee in Northern Ontario and does not reach Churchill or Manitoba’s primary polar bear-viewing areas.

If you are researching a polar bear train trip in Canada, Churchill is the destination to look for and VIA Rail’s Winnipeg–Churchill service is the rail route that reaches it.

Important: The Winnipeg–Churchill train is not currently included in our standard Canadian Train Vacations itineraries. Our Churchill polar bear trips travel by VIA Rail’s The Canadian through the Rockies to Winnipeg before flying between Winnipeg and Churchill. If travelling to Churchill by train is important to you, ask your Vacation Advisor whether it can be added or arranged as part of a personalized itinerary.

How do you reach Churchill via Winnipeg?

There are two main ways to travel between Winnipeg and Churchill: by plane or by train.

  1. Flying between Winnipeg and Churchill: Flying is the option used in our current Churchill polar bear and Northern Lights itineraries. It significantly reduces travel time and allows more of the vacation to be spent experiencing Churchill itself.

Our Canadian Train and Polar Bear Experience, for example, combines a sleeper-train journey on VIA Rail’s The Canadian between Vancouver and Winnipeg with flights between Winnipeg and Churchill.
  2. Taking the Winnipeg–Churchill train: VIA Rail’s Winnipeg–Churchill train travels between the two communities in approximately 45 hours and operates through remote northern Manitoba. The route passes through communities including The Pas and Thompson as the landscape gradually changes from boreal forest to subarctic tundra.

The train offers Economy Class and Sleeper Class, with berth and private cabin options available in Sleeper Class.

Compare the classes below. Prices are shown in CAD, per person, one way from Winnipeg:

Class What to expect Meals Train ticket price* (one-way)
Economy Class Spacious reclining seat, checked baggage service Light meals, snacks and drinks available for purchase From $241 CAD per person
Sleeper Class Berth Semi-private berth with daytime seating that converts to a bed, shower access and checked baggage service. Take-out-style food, snacks and drinks available for purchase From $484 CAD per person
Sleeper Class Cabin Private cabins with daytime seating that converts to bunk-style beds, shower access and checked baggage service. Take-out-style food, snacks and drinks available for purchase From $732 CAD per person

*Pricing shown in the table above is for the VIA Rail train ticket only and does not include hotels, flights, transfers, excursions or other trip components. Fares are subject to availability and may change depending on travel dates, class of service and booking conditions.

Our standard Churchill trips do not include the Winnipeg–Churchill train and instead use flights between Winnipeg and Churchill. At approximately 46 to 48 hours each way, it is a long journey with two nights onboard and may not be the right experience for every traveller. The rail journey may be considered as part of a personalized Northern Canada by train itinerary in limited circumstances, depending on schedules and availability.

What is the polar bear and Northern Lights experience in Churchill?

For travellers interested in Churchill Manitoba polar bears, the best time to visit is from mid-October to mid-November, when bears gather along Hudson Bay waiting for the sea ice to form. Beluga whales are most commonly seen in July and August, when thousands move into the Churchill River estuary and surrounding waters. Northern Lights viewing is best from November to March, when longer, darker nights create stronger aurora-viewing conditions.

Because these experiences peak at different times of year, it is uncommon to see polar bears, belugas and the Northern Lights on the same trip. Other Churchill highlights can include a Tundra Buggy excursion, exploring the town and visiting the MV Ithaca shipwreck.

Experience Peak season Other times to visit Best seen from
Polar bears October-November July-August Tundra buggy excursions, Tundra Buggy Lodge
Northern Lights February-March November-January Dan's Diner, Thanadelthur Lodge, Churchill town
Beluga whales July-August N/A Boat tours, kayaking tours

For travellers interested in a Northern Lights Canada train experience, the best approach is to combine rail travel with time in a northern destination. Aurora may sometimes be visible from observation cars on The Canadian or The Winnipeg-Churchill trains, but sightings are not guaranteed. A VIA Rail journey can be paired with a Churchill or Yukon Northern Lights experience for more dedicated viewing opportunities.

I love the Tundra Buggy Lodge because it gives you the chance to stay right out on the tundra, surrounded by the landscape where polar bears roam. It’s a unique way to feel immersed in Churchill’s wilderness.

What does a Northern Canada rail vacation include?

Our Northern Canada tours can combine iconic Canadian train travel with flights, accommodations and guided experiences in the North. Canadian Train Vacations creates personalized itineraries around the season, destinations and experiences that matter most to you.

Our current Churchill trips generally fly between Winnipeg and Churchill rather than using the Winnipeg–Churchill train.

A typical Churchill trip may include:

  • Hotel stays in Winnipeg before and after your Churchill experience
  • Accommodation in Churchill
  • Tundra Buggy polar bear viewing during fall polar bear season
  • Seasonal wildlife and sightseeing experiences, like kayaking tours in summer
  • Tour of Churchill town, including the Polar Bear Holding Facility, Parks Canada historic site, or MV Ithaca historic site
  • Transfers between airports, hotels and included activities.

For travellers who want to combine Northern Canada with a longer rail journey, our Lords of the Wilderness Bear Viewing and Canadian Train and Polar Bear Experience pair VIA Rail travel with time in Winnipeg and flights to Churchill for polar bear viewing. These itineraries are designed so the rail, flights, hotels, transfers and northern experiences work together as one trip.

Other Northern Canada vacations focus on aurora viewing rather than Churchill wildlife. Whitehorse, Yukon and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories are both popular destinations for Northern Lights trips, with winter and fall itineraries built around guided aurora viewing and northern activities.

Which gateway cities serve the North?

  • Winnipeg is the main gateway to Churchill. Flights and VIA Rail’s Winnipeg–Churchill service both depart from the city, while VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Winnipeg with destinations across Western and Eastern Canada.
Rather than treating Winnipeg only as a connection point, consider spending time exploring the city. If you are looking for things to do in Winnipeg, The Forks, the Exchange District and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights are among its best-known attractions.
  • Whitehorse, Yukon provides access to a different part of Northern Canada. The Yukon is particularly popular for winter Northern Lights experiences and combines aurora viewing with northern culture, wilderness and outdoor activities.
A Yukon experience can be added before or after another Canadian vacation, depending on your travel dates and interests.

My favourite place to visit in Winnipeg is the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Its powerful exhibits explore human rights stories from Canada and around the world, and the striking architecture makes the museum itself well worth seeing.
