GoldLeaf versus SilverLeaf

Both SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf can accommodate a range of accessibility and mobility needs; GoldLeaf includes an elevator as well as a spiral staircase between the upper seating and lower dining levels, while SilverLeaf’s single-level layout requires less moving around while on the train.

When is the best month for a Rocky Mountaineer tour?

The best time for a Rocky Mountaineer tour depends on the scenery, weather and travel experience you prefer. The season runs from mid-April to mid-October.

  • Mid-September to early October: Early fall brings cooler temperatures and seasonal foliage in parts of the Canadian Rockies and Western Canada. It’s a great time for wildlife viewing due to the elk rut, salmon run, and bears preparing for hibernation.
  • June to early September: Summer offers the longest daylight hours and warmest weather, making it a popular time for sightseeing in Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. Lakes have thawed and show their brilliant turquoise colours again.
  • April to May: Spring can offer some of the lowest starting prices of the Rocky Mountaineer season, along with brilliant views of snow-capped mountains and rushing waterfalls. Another great time for viewing wildlife as animals emerge after the cold winter.

Whatever time of year you choose, Rocky Mountaineer is designed as a relaxed, comfortable sightseeing experience, with daylight rail travel and hotel stays overnight rather than sleeping on the train.

What should you know before booking a Rocky Mountaineer tour?

A few practical details can help you decide whether a Rocky Mountaineer train tour is right for you:

  • Train travel is during daylight hours. Rocky Mountaineer is designed for sightseeing, so the train travels by day and you stay in a hotel overnight between rail days.

  • The pace is relaxed. Guests remain in comfortable assigned seating for much of the journey, with meals, beverages and onboard commentary provided during the day.

  • The full vacation can be personalized. Canadian Train Vacations can combine the rail journey with hotels, transfers, sightseeing and additional time in the Canadian Rockies.

  • Prices vary by trip, date and service level. Your overall cost will depend on factors such as SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf, hotel choices, trip length and included activities.

  • Popular departures are worth planning ahead for. Summer dates and GoldLeaf can sell out early, so it is best to book at least six months in advance.
