What is the Park Car on the Canadian train?

The dome car is the Park Car’s upper level, reached by a short flight of stairs. Its 24 seats sit beneath curved windows that extend overhead and around the sides, giving a broad view of the Canadian landscape.  Guests tend to find their own rhythm for visiting the Park Car: a morning coffee with the prairies unfolding ahead, an afternoon with the mountains rising on both sides, and an evening with the setting sun laying colour across the horizon. The seating is spacious enough that the dome feels relaxed rather than crowded, even when it is full.

The Park Car carries one of two glass domes on The Canadian. The other, the Skyline dome car, sits mid-train. 

VIA Rail Prestige Class passengers have exclusive access to the Park Car’s glass dome for the main part of the day in peak season. Sleeper Plus guests receive scheduled access in the evenings and early mornings. 

Where is the Park Car on the train? 

The Park Car is the final car on The Canadian. Its rounded rear observation lounge looks back down the track, so you can watch the landscape recede as the train travels east or west. Eligible sleeper guests reach the car through the train’s interior corridor, and the onboard team can help you find it. The Park Car is reserved for Prestige 

The lower-level shared spaces are accessible without using the stairs to the dome. 

What views does the dome offer through the Rockies? 

The most celebrated stretch of the Park Car experience comes between Jasper and the mountains, where the Canadian Rockies rise on both sides of the Athabasca Valley. From the rear dome, the peaks recede one by one as the train moves through them, creating a view that no photograph quite captures. 

Across the Prairies, the dome offers a different kind of drama: the near-infinite horizon of the Canadian plains, with grain elevators rising at intervals and the sky taking up three-quarters of the view. Wildlife is often visible from the dome window: a bear moving through a riverside clearing, an elk on a hillside, or a hawk circling in the thermals above the grassland. These are shared moments, and guests in the Park Car often find themselves spontaneously pointing things out to each other.

As of the most recent information available (updated September 2026): in peak season, the Park Car dome is typically reserved for Prestige Class guests. Sleeper Plus guests have access to the Skyline dome car and to the lower-level Park Car lounges (Bullet Lounge and Mural Lounge), but not to the Park dome itself during peak-season departures.

The future of dome cars on VIA Rail 

VIA Rail has announced plans for a new long-distance fleet intended to replace the existing Budd-built cars on The Canadian over time. The timeline for this fleet renewal has shifted in recent years, and as of late 2026 the heritage Park-series cars remain in service. The new fleet, when introduced, is expected to include modern observation facilities, though the specific design of future dome or observation cars has not been fully confirmed by VIA Rail.
