What’s the difference between one-way, round-trip and circle rail tours?

One-way, round-trip and circle rail tours differ mainly in their route, and where your journey begins and ends. A one-way tour takes you from one destination to another, while a round-trip journey returns you to your original starting point. A circle tour combines two or more distinct rail routes into a complete loop.

The table below highlights the key differences between one-way, round-trip and circle rail tours, including their typical duration, example journeys, approximate starting price and who each type of journey may suit best.

Tour type Typical duration Example journeys Approximate starting price per person Best for
One-way 5 to 6 days Vancouver to Calgary Around $5,390 CAD per person Travellers pairing the train with something else, like an Alaska cruise or a trip to see the Northern Lights without needing to backtrack
Round-trip 8 to 10 days Vancouver to Jasper, then back to Vancouver Around $8,870 CAD per person Guests who prefer or need to return to their departure city
Circle tour 9 to 14 days Vancouver and back via a different route Around $16,190 CAD per person Rail enthusiasts who value route variety and unique experiences

Note: The prices above are approximate starting prices for a personalized rail tour, as prices can vary depending on the season, route and availability. When booking a rail tour with Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada, your trip price includes train tickets, transfers, accommodations, experiences and tours.

Circle train trips: travel there and back using a different route

A circle rail tour offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience by taking you to your destination and back again via a different route. This allows you to see more of Canada’s landscapes, visit multiple destinations and experience different rail journeys within one trip.

SilverLeaf vs GoldLeaf: Which to Choose

Double Quote Icon

SilverLeaf Service is the most popular choice for first-time Rocky Mountaineer travellers because it still includes panoramic views, delicious hot meals, and access to an outdoor viewing area at a lower price point than GoldLeaf. It’s a great option for travellers who want to leave more room in the budget for hotels and sightseeing in the Canadian Rockies. If the trip is for a milestone celebration, GoldLeaf is definitely worth the upgrade!

How do you get from Vancouver to Calgary by train?

There's no direct passenger train between Vancouver and Calgary, but you can still travel most of the way by rail. You can also travel from Vancouver to Jasper on either the Rocky Mountaineer or VIA Rail, then continue to Calgary by road.

When you plan your trip with Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada, you don’t have to arrange these transfers yourself. Your Vacation Advisor creates a personalized itinerary and takes care of your transfers, train tickets, accommodations and bookings, with your luggage handled along the way. You can leave the logistics to us and focus on enjoying your journey.

Can you take the Rocky Mountaineer one way?

Yes, Rocky Mountaineer can be travelled one way, either eastbound or westbound. When you plan with us, you have the flexibility to choose your travel direction, decide whether you want a one-way or round-trip journey, choose how many nights you’d like to stay, select your hotels and destinations, and add the activities and experiences that interest you.

One-way rail tours for older travellers

A one-way rail tour can be an ideal choice for older travellers who seek a relaxing and comfortable travel experience without having to backtrack along the same route. Canadian train tours for seniors on VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer offer spacious seating, panoramic windows, and accessible amenities that make long journeys feel comfortable and unique. Wide reclining seats provide comfort during extended daylight travel on Rocky Mountaineer, while large windows frame the passing scenery of forests, mountains, and rivers.

Dining cars on VIA Rail serve freshly prepared meals inspired by Canadian cuisine, and can also serve as social spaces where passengers can enjoy delicious food while connecting with other travellers. Observation lounges feature dome-style panoramic windows and comfortable seating, creating a communal space where travellers can gather to appreciate the landscapes in a calm atmosphere. VIA Rail can accommodate a range of mobility and accessibility needs, including accessible sleeper cabins on some departures, and these are confirmed when you book.

With a one-way trip, you see somewhere new each day without retracing your route. Your train tickets, hotels and transfers are all included when booking with us.
