Featured VIA Rail Train Trips with Cost

VIA Rail can be the centrepiece of a Canadian vacation, combined with hotels, sightseeing and another iconic rail experience. These are complete Canadian Train Vacations itineraries rather than rail-only fares. Depending on the trip, your itinerary can combine VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer rail experiences.

How much does it cost to travel across Canada by VIA Rail?

A rail ticket between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian starts from $514 CAD per person in Economy. The same full transcontinental journey starts from $1,083 CAD in a Sleeper Plus berth, $1,960 CAD in a Sleeper Plus Cabin for Two and $6,040 CAD in Prestige Class.

The Canadian is VIA Rail's flagship transcontinental train, and is the only across Canada rail option, travelling approximately 4,466 kilometres between Vancouver and Toronto through the Canadian Rockies, the Prairies and Northern Ontario.

VIA Rail fares vary according to three main factors:

  • Travel dates: fares change throughout the year, with availability and demand affecting the price.

  • Class and accommodation: Economy is the lowest-priced option, while Sleeper Plus adds overnight accommodation and included meals. Prestige provides VIA Rail's highest level of onboard comfort and service.

  • Availability: fares and cabin availability can change as a departure fills, particularly for private sleeper cabins.

Many of the itineraries available through Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada include travelling across Canada by VIA Rail on the Canadian train, as well as time to explore around Toronto, Vancouver, and within the Canadian Rockies.

What does Economy, Sleeper Plus and Prestige cost in $CAD?

Consider winter for value

Winter can be an excellent time to experience The Canadian if your dates are flexible. Fares can be lower than during busier travel periods, while snow-covered forests, Prairies and Rocky Mountain landscapes create a completely different view of Canada.

How much is a VIA Rail sleeper Cabin for Two?

A VIA Rail Sleeper Plus Cabin for two on The Canadian train is the most popular choice for couples travelling between Toronto and Vancouver, and starts from $1,960 CAD per person, based on two people sharing the cabin.

The fare includes the private sleeping accommodation, a private toilet and sink, and all meals during the journey. By day, the cabin provides private seating; at night, it converts into upper and lower beds. There is also access to shared showers.

For couples taking the multi-night journey on The Canadian, a Cabin for Two offers considerably more privacy than a berth while remaining below the price of Prestige Class.

How do season and booking time change the price?

VIA Rail uses dynamic fares, meaning the price for the same cabin and route can differ considerably depending on when you travel and when you book. Understanding the pattern helps your Canadian Insider find the right window for your plans.

  • Peak season (June to September). Demand is highest across summer, particularly on The
  • Canadian and during major events. Fares in all classes are at their highest, and popular Sleeper Plus double cabins can be limited.
  • Shoulder season (May and October). Fares step down noticeably, weather is still generally good for travel, and trains are less busy. Many of our travellers find this the best balance of price and experience.
  • Low season (November to April, excluding holidays). Sleeper Plus and Prestige generally have more availability, and the winter scenery across the prairies is quietly spectacular.

Are there senior fares and other ways to save?

VIA Rail offers several fare types and programmes that can reduce the overall cost of your journey, particularly for older travellers and families. Inclusive itineraries through Canadian Train Vacations by Fresh Tracks Canada already have industry discounts worked into the total cost.

  • Senior fares: travellers aged 60 and over qualify for a reduced fare on most VIA Rail routes and classes.
  • Child fares: children under a qualifying age travel at half the adult fare on most routes, making VIA Rail a practical option for family itineraries.
  • Rail passes: VIA Rail's Canrailpass allows a set number of trips within a fixed period, which can offer savings for travellers planning several separate VIA Rail segments.
  • Special offers: VIA Rail releases time-limited Escape fares and other reduced-price departures on selected routes.

Canadian Train Vacations' local travel experts consider your dates, preferred class and complete itinerary when looking for value. This is particularly useful when your train journey is being combined with hotels, transfers and sightseeing rather than booked as a standalone ticket.

Is VIA Rail worth it?

VIA Rail ticket prices can seem high on long-distance journeys because you are paying for much more than transportation between two stations. Several factors contribute to VIA Rail pricing, and understanding them makes the value clearer.

  • Long distances. The Canadian covers approximately 4,466 km, taking close to four nights to complete. At that scale, even a moderate per-kilometre fare adds up to a significant total.
  • Meals and accommodation on sleeper services. Sleeper Plus and Prestige fares include all meals in the dining car and your private cabin for every night on board. When you separate those costs out, the per-night value is often comparable to a mid-range hotel plus restaurant dining.
  • Scenery you cannot reach any other way. The Canadian passes through wilderness stretches between Winnipeg and Jasper that have no parallel road. The access itself carries a premium that travellers consistently find worthwhile.
  • Corridor fares. On shorter Corridor routes between Quebec City and Windsor, fares are considerably lower, often starting from around $100 CAD for a same-day trip. Not all VIA Rail travel is expensive; the cost rises with distance and class.

The best way to assess value is therefore to compare what is included, rather than looking at the rail fare alone.
