Insider Tip: Pack a Small Bag for Essentials
Since checked baggage is not accessible during the train journey, I always bring a carry-on with travel essentials, snacks, and electronics. There are no showers in Economy so I recommend also bringing some facecloths and toiletries to freshen up.

Yes, passengers are allowed to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages onboard in Economy Class. While VIA Rail offers a café service with snacks and light meals for purchase on most routes, bringing your own food is a good option, especially for longer journeys like The Canadian (Toronto–Vancouver).
