History and Overview

At the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, there's more to the story than its impressive facade. The history of this hotel adds an extra layer of fascination for travelers seeking a unique experience.

Lake Louise was originally called Horâ Juthin Îmne (meaning “lake of little fishes”) by the Stoney First Nations people that were the first inhabitants of the area. In 1882, Thomas Wilson, a worker for the Canadian Pacific Railway, was introduced to the lake’s striking blue and green waters and he named it Emerald Lake. Not long after, it was renamed Lake Louise after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria.

The transformation into the esteemed resort, however, began in 1890 when Cornelius Van Horne, the railway's general manager, constructed a small log cabin known as "Chalet Lake Louise" on the shore. What started as a humble cabin hosting only fifty guests in its first year rapidly grew in popularity — accommodating 50,000 guests by 1912. It later evolved into the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise we see today.

The hotel has grown into a historic landmark that also offers glimpses of the past through its architecture and setting.

Located in Banff National Park, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise boasts a beautiful setting that complements its history. On the shores of the turquoise waters of Lake Louise, the hotel is renown for its famous view. The lake’s vibrant color results from the rock flour brought into the lake by glacial meltwater.

With its blend of fascinating history, stunning architecture, and amazing natural surroundings, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel is a place sure to impress.

Location in Banff National Park

So where exactly is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel? Well, it's located in Banff National Park. And this isn't just any park; it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Canadian Rockies. Its reputation as a world-class destination brings in travelers from all corners of the globe.

The hotel sits surprisingly close to the eastern edge of Lake Louise, backed by the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Here, you get a clear view of the bright, turquoise Lake Louise and the formidable Victoria Glacier from the comfort of your room.

Explore Lake Louise Drive by car or bike, taking in the breathtaking natural beauty. And the Victoria Glacier also makes for an excellent day trip spot.

All in all, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise places you smack dab in the middle of the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
